MillennialsThe current market of homebuyers is increasingly a member of the millennial generation. It is projected that in the year 2018, 72% of people between the ages of 18 and 34 will be planning on purchasing a home. And with the millennials come specific likes – and dislikes – for what buyers want to see in a home.

In terms of home features that sell, there five features that top the list of what millenials are looking for. The more you are able to focus on these elements while selling your home, the better your chances of selling fast.

To help you get started, here are five home sellers will do well to consider.

An Open Floor Plan

It is pretty simple: millennials want homes with open floor plans. Homes with natural light, high ceilings and feel open are as good as it gets. Open floor plans also allow millenials plenty of space and opportunity to host dinner parties or have guests over

A Gourmet Kitchen

Thanks in no small part to TV DIY shows, 53% of millennial homebuyers are looking for a gourmet kitchen. Millenials have been marketed too heavily with kitchens with high-end finishes and lots of “toys.”

When it comes to appliances, gas stoves top their lists. Millennial buyers also appreciate the “extras” like double ovens, warming trays and a separate freezer spaces. Granite counters and subway tile backsplash are also heavily favored.

Backyard Decks

A perfect “millennial” includes a backyard deck. Entertaining and hosting gatherings ranks near the top of millennial social activities and an outdoor living space plays a key role in this.

It is estimated that 59% of millennials are looking for this feature. So home sellers should consider trying built in seating, installing an outdoor kitchen and/or creating split level entertaining options to stand out from the competition.

Balcony Views

While not a realistic option for a number of sellers, millennials do appreciate rooms with an outdoor view. If you do have a balcony, consider creating a seating area that offers buyers a place to sit and relax for a moment. Additions like bright colored flowers and comfortable seating can convince the buyer that this is where they can relax at the end of a long day.

Home Gardens

“Organic” and “millennial” go hand in hand. For this reason, being able to grow vegetables in their own backyard can be a major selling point to millennial buyers.

Consider creating a garden or showcasing a specific area in your yard that would be the perfect placement for one. Sellers can also take advantage of small yards and condos by displaying potted vegetable plants or creatively mixing vegetable plants into your landscaping.

When it comes to selling your home, you need to understand what your buyers will be looking for. Sellers do not need to spend money on implementing all of the above features, but they will be well served to understand what millennials are looking for shopping for a new home.
